Argentina reached the final of the first World Cup in 1930 and then lost 2–4 to Uruguay. More than 40 years later, Argentina won the final in their home country in 1978, defeating the Netherlands 3–1 and taking the throne for the first time in its history. A few years later Argentina, with Diego Maradona at the helm, won again in 1986, winning 3–2 over West Germany. The last time they reached the World Cup final was in 2014, before losing 0-1 by Gotze’s goal for Germany. Earlier at the 1990 World Cup, Argentina also lost 0–1 to Germany by a controversial penalty. Two coaches who won the World Cup for Argentina were César Luis Menotti in 1978 and Carlos Bilardo in 1986.
